River Runs

The cawing crow disturbs the morning peace
The bustle of the town
The tired people rise to their feet
And make way to the corner store and breakfast spot
Food's not great but the coffee's hot at least
Except that Betty's late to open yet again
The gravel lot is filled
With the grumblings of the tired folk
In chorus with the sunrise and the breeze
John stares at his watch in disbelief
It's already 5:15

That's just life 'round here
To be satisfied
Some things always change
But one thing stays the same
This river keeps on running

The browbeat of the sun
The baying of the horses
The whirring of the farm machines
In Georgia's corner eave
Swallows built a nest
Eggs already hatched
Now she has a few more mouths to feed
The riverbank was flooded from last nights storm
Twenty acres lost
You couldn't cross the bridge on 93
Old Peter's house was crushed
Mighty cedar fell right through his roof
And through the bed in which he sleeps
But he was fine
Rode out the storm that night
At the local dive
With a tall glass of whiskey

That's just life 'round here
To be satisfied
Some things always change
But one thing stays the same
This river keeps on running
