Herbert Hoover (A Life)
The Hoover's of West Branch, Iowa were filled with joy
When, on the 10th of August, '74 arrived a boy
Herbert grew, and in '95, entered Stanford U.
And started as a mining engineer once he was through
He worked in Australia and China, and surely, his wealth grew
And during World War I, became the U.S. Food Czar, too
Herbert Hoover
Fought for our self-sufficiency
Back in 1899, he wed his sweetheart, Lou
They had their children, Herbert and Allan, and stopped at two
He lead the Relief Administration to keep the world fed
In '21, Hoover became Department of Commerce head
In 1928, he ran and won the presidency
But in months, the market crashed, and collapsed the economy
Herbert Hoover
Fought for our self-sufficiency
The 31st president, Hoover, only served for four
He wanted the nation to help each other, but they needed more
Hoover's goals were tax cuts and more public works spending
To help farmers, reform banking, economic mending
He wanted people to help each other instead of the dole
Which made the democrats claim Hoover had a heartless soul
They made Hoover a depression scapegoat, lost re-election
From '33, he criticized FDR's new direction
Herbert Hoover
Fought for our self-sufficiency
He remained active in government with Truman and Ike
His tarnished reputation healing, someone who people like
He spent his last years writing memoirs, till in '64
On October 20th, Hoover wrote not one word more
His legacy was his error in how bad the Depression was
His actions, wise but wrong, learned what loss of the nation's trust does
