Injuries

Does our love hold a candle
To the way it was years ago?
Would we even know?
Could we see its growth
Or are we way too close?

Are we sure that this can handle
This change in the way we perceive
Or is our love such a fragile thing
To even bring this up
Sets the flame flickering

And now our burns have clearly
Moved beyond the 1st degree
Will the scars hurt like these new injuries?

This history is substantial
Yeah it seems this flame is all we've ever known
But if it's guttering, yeah is it a gamble
Is staying put better than being alone?

We could call an ending or just never say what we mean
Hold our tongues and cut fresh wounds to bleed

We're well aware of where the other is weak
By now we both should know better than that
Shouldn't we?

We both know that we need this flame to see
A way out of the dark to heal our injuries
