Neon Light

The neon of the launderette sign breaks through the blinds
The night hums under the weight of a million different minds
I don't know love songs, I'm wide awake
But there's nothing really here that is a stake

To the east the stacks and the smoke cross the tracks
And the tracks cross the water, the banks leaning their backs
On the concrete and the grass as the ferries slowly pass
Under the bridge, to places I have never been

And I look at your face, I wonder what you have seen
And the places where you belong, the places you've always been
Where you mean to go, if you've got anywhere to go
7Rivers still uncrossed, maybe we are both lost
But we can still hold hands in the dark

The freight train pulls all the leaves from the tree
Summer turned to autumn, but there's still you and me
Every night gets cold, and I've been so cold for a while
But with every day, you make it a little easier to smile

And I hope what hurt you before doesn't hurt you anymore
We can stop the world, I'll hold you until we know what its for
The evening cracks to night, the fog lays down low/
But it's the fog that carries the neon to your window

Illuminating the past, your little city, the streets and the signs
The cold of the evenings, the warmth of your body and unlearnt lines
Or to my harbour beaches where I left everyone behind
The pain on the sand, my life left in icy depths
Remained only this lonely mind

And the future, all the memories on the shelf
You're home and it warms my soul
You can be you and I can be myself
In the moments made whole, and the midnight glow

I'm wide awake, I know it'll all be alright
The neon light burns through the night
The neon light burns through the night
