All I Could Do

I said I wouldn't wait
I'd follow a plan
Try to focus on the things I could understand
I aspired to a fiction
A helpful lie
A repeated line I hoped I might buy
That I would move on
That I would forget
That somewhere now is a half-moon I haven't met
That we were wrong and shouldn't try again
That she was great but not a best friend

I wasn't ready
The plan fell through
I was moving slow, I had an excuse
Concentrated on my songs
Dreamed of fireworks bright
A finale so complete that she would see the light
That she made a mistake
That she was just scared
The fear in her heart grew larger the more that she cared
But she could bear the risk, and she would go on
She would tell me late at night in her own song

The music wasn't heard
I don't know why
Maybe my colors didn't catch her eye
Maybe the light was blinding
Blew embers in her hair
Maybe she couldn't look, the pain was everywhere
But that was the end
That was all I could do
I shot a beacon up into the sky
It just didn't get through
But now the dawn can break with something new
And the helpful lie
Can become the truth
