'Not to worry' we initially
Mistook for a joke from a laboratory
Who knew then we'd be closing cities
And borders with neighboring countries
O how we fled, o how we panicked
Drinking the dread from the Titanic
Listin' alone in the Atlantic
Some got the blues others went manic
For many the daily ground to a halt
Had barely a month saved away in the vault
While others mounted in front of a screen
Browsing dreams and drippin' ice cream
The authorities met and doled us
Preventional and cautionary measures
Wash hands well, and, even better
Gargle throat with salty water
Keep distance from first to the last
Wherever you go please wear your mask
Trace where you've been, as soon as you pass
In any one of these 27 apps

If each do his part as a world citizen
With good luck, we'll get the vaccine
A Yersinian we can surely bypass
From just a couple of these (really) simple asks

For 2 sum'n years, IT lived among us
Uninvited it sprung upon us
Unsighted it exhibited
Unlimited wherein inhabited
Some blamed God, by whom it's fated
Others blamed others they already hated
On the couch, at the screen, berated
Then in the dark senselessly mated
We found solace and satiated
In whatever cesspool we marinated
Every content de-levitated
Every cause held coronavated
We ate lies - how the ball flies
Took up sides along fault lines
The global social hysteriae
Another kinda co-existing bacteriae
Bit by bit sunk in isolation
Bitterly craving salvation
Sensing a kind of malediction
And tides of a high divine abandon
Uncertain about the future
Whether we live or become a number
Suspecting we may be infected
When it shapeshifts to an air-transmitted

And all the while up piled the bodies
In hospitals and mortuaries
Cemeteries, incinerators
Mort-riggers on street corners

Get on outta there!

IT finally passed, with undue mercy
Reopening the fermatures of the cities
The isolation that has plagued recently
Is finally receding from memory
The dopplery shrieks of ambulances
The omnipresence of the unpretentious|opportunists
The nights we gathered in unity
To bang our pots and pans in solidarity
Some got closer, others farther
Some sure shuttered-up forever
Some lesser, and others greater
And some contracted the even longer
Well, what have to show for this global atrocity?
A pile of about 20 million bodies
A few hundred million more in poverty
And a little less simpleton sensibility
We made it thru, though not thoroughly
Stared too hard into our nillity
Sat with an abject anonymity
Bearing the scars of our anomie
But tell me - how did we
Luck out so damn absolutely?
All our modern nice-ssities
Conspired to deliver us from calamity

We avoided what we've had had to fear
That voided the countryside of King Lear
Could've been a worse nucular winter
Or a wayward asteroid trajecture

IT will remain one of history's mysteries
Wherefore we were spared from a worse destiny
Finally have we collectively
One memorable Memento Mori!
But 'the weight of this sad time we must obey
Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say:'
Could we have received immunity
Categorically in no other way?!
And to all the frontline in the blue scrub
