The Assassination of Lincoln

Bitter that the South was losing the war, and pro-slavery
John Wilkes Booth plotted ways to grow the Confederacy
In '64, he hatched a plan, Lincoln, he would kidnap
Trade him for the South's POWs, keep slave states on the map
The plan fell through, but then, Booth heard Lincoln's 'blacks can vote' speech
And at that moment, he felt Lincoln's murder, within reach

April 14th of '65, at Ford's Theater, he heard
That Lincoln would attend a play that night, so passed the word
Booth assembled his like-minded team for the killing
Of Lincoln, Seward and VP Johnson, hate, all consuming
Meanwhile, Mary Lincoln had lost two sons, still distraught
Maybe going to a play might cheer Mary up, Abe thought

That night, the three left for their deed, Lewis Powell stabbed Seward in bed
Johnson's assassin, George Atzerodt decided to get drunk, instead
Seward survived, but Booth, with gun and knife, he would proceed
To the box where Abe and Mary would sit, clear, where his actions would lead
No guard there, stood, Booth entered the box, and slowly, raised his gun
Then, fired as a roar of laughter came, and knew his deed was done

Lincoln collapsed and Booth prepared to jump onto the stage
Was nearly stopped but slashed the arm of Rathbone in his rage
Booth made his escape by horse as the next morning, Lincoln died
Fled south for 12 days, soldiers found a barn he was inside
'Twas set ablaze when he remained, through the boards, by a soldier, was shot
Dragged outside, in two hours, he died, so ends his evil plot
