The Binding

It was not lost upon us
The invention of a lie
The alibi, impossible

But we reconcile
We give our thanks
In swallowing it
Over and over and over again

A brand new car on a contract
Signature in triplicate
With a mortgage, interest
An extension of a loan
A five year plan, or was it ten?

There's another tear in the Binding
Pushing, straining, commiserating
Hating, grating, kicking, screaming

The prodigal son of a wealthy senator
An invalid, the only scion
A moonlit night and a promise broken a ritual
With a consequence
A compromise
You weigh in your head
over and over and over again

Was it ever really there?
All that sacrifice, sacrosanct,
Sent to thin air
Air you can hardly breathe,
Let alone grasp
Tight enough to pull yourself
In any direction
And even if you could,
Where can you go within one or two arm's lengths?
So get a grip
Catch your breath
And good luck

Invention
Of a lie
Was not lost upon us
A contract
A mortgage
With interest
Extension
