Paul's Boutique

Sarah broke her arm in at least a dozen places
But it was really nothing next to how badly bruised her face is
She wrapped her father's car around a hydro pole
Six weeks pregnant, twenty-five years old

That fire in her chest
Was burning low of late
And if ever you got close enough
You could feel the heat escape

And all the townsfolk said she was unfit to be a mother
That when she had a drink, she just had to have another
The nurses did their job, cleaning up the gore
It was impossible to tell which wounds were there before

That fire in her chest
Was burning low of late
And if ever you got close enough
You could feel the heat escape

Sarah's father cried
As he stood before the grave
Because those we love the most in this life
Are the hardest ones to save

And that fire in his chest
It's been burning low of late
And if anyone gets close enough
They could feel the heat escape
They could feel the heat escape
