Other Versions

I read this quote today that stung my heart
It asked me, "How do I know from the start
That this path leads to the right version of you?"
How could I know? I figured it out too slow

But maybe these other versions of me have got it figured out
Maybe one has a house on a lake, or one doesn't make mistakes
Maybe one has found the one to make life more fun
Or the other's got a New York Times bestseller
Maybe one has never stopped chasing her dreams
Maybe one didn't give in to society so easily
Or maybe one finally got her words out to the world

The dread in me shows that maybe I could have chosen differently
So many paths long gone, only kept in this song
But lately I'm wondering vaguely if I could ever live greatly
Am I right or wrong? Or is life just stringing me along?

But maybe these other versions of me have got it figured out
Maybe one has a house on a lake, or one doesn't make mistakes
Maybe one has found the one to make life more fun
Or the other's got a New York Times bestseller
Maybe one has never stopped chasing her dreams
Maybe one didn't give in to society so easily
Or maybe one finally got her words out to the world

How do I know just where to go? I'm trying
Lost in a sea of other versions of me, I'm drowning
