I Am Not an Animal
Come and see! Come and see!
Your nightmares in the flesh
A penny gaff of horror
More beast than man, a creature so twisted
So broken, he could not be made by the hand of god
But rather from the devil's own
Satisfy your morbid curiosity
Gaze upon mystic atrocity
From the foggy Midlands
I give you, London, the hideous Elephant Man!
What fascination we have in botched creation
Your wonderment fills this burlap with pounds
And my belly with wine
You may look down your perfectly shaped nose
But rest assured, this beast is here on free will
I am not an animal
And, yet, I must eat like one
My body is a wretched vessel
But I feel the cold
And the labor union life is too difficult
For someone with these afflictions
This freak show, this penny gaff
I am on display, yet hidden from the elements
Fed and given a small stipend on which to live
But I am haunted by the horror I see everywhere
In the faces of all those who come to gawk
They take me with them, I can tell
An evil version of me visits them in their dreams
But I am not evil. I am a cast stone, skipping, ready to sink
I miss my mother. I miss my uncle
The only people who treated me with kindness
Now I sit here on display
Referred to as a beast, a monster, an animal
I am not an animal
Your nightmares in the flesh
A penny gaff of horror
More beast than man, a creature so twisted
So broken, he could not be made by the hand of god
But rather from the devil's own
Satisfy your morbid curiosity
Gaze upon mystic atrocity
From the foggy Midlands
I give you, London, the hideous Elephant Man!
What fascination we have in botched creation

And my belly with wine

But rest assured, this beast is here on free will

And, yet, I must eat like one
My body is a wretched vessel
But I feel the cold
And the labor union life is too difficult
