Cancer Stick (Poem)

I went outside to consume half a cancer stick
Only because I had had whiskey and because they were under my bed

I stumbled out to the road
I wanted to see something
I didn't know what

It began to rain, strangely
It hadn't rained in weeks, I realized
Only because I could smell the asphalt

I wandered onto the yellow lines
Only because the road was desolate
Only because it was 3am, Thursday

I walked the line, an acrobat on a tightrope
Clip clop went my feet
I was wearing sandals

I put out the cigarette and headed for bed
Only because my feet were going to get wet

I thought of her
Only because the candle she made me was sitting on my bedside table
I could hardly bring myself to burn it
But I lit the wick

Only because my sweater smelled like cigarettes
Only because my room smelled like cigarettes
Only because I hate the smell of cigarettes
