Trapeze

This tightrope that I walk I walk alone
It cuts me like a razor against my tired bones
But I never look too far down or behind
The shadows that are circling are not so hard to find
But sometimes I look up and then I see
In the bright lights there's a girl swinging on her trapeze
And I see that she is looking down at me
And I find myself in thrall and I wonder if I'll fall
Well this little trapeze above the crowd
Is hanging by a thread, hanging from the clouds
I see the world below so distantly
As casually back and forth I swing
Sometimes I look down and I see
A man that's walking oh so carefully
I see that he is looking up at me
I don't want him to stumble I want him to believe
This tightrope that I walk is narrowing
But I'm holding in my hands the means to keep on balancing
As day by day the wire cuts through my skin
And the shadows that are circling will claim me once again
Sometimes I look down and then I see
The closer that I get to you the more the distance seems
But then I see you're looking up at me
I'll dangle myself down until our fingers meet
