People Pleaser

I'm too busy for myself
Got time for everybody else
I always pick me last

And I'm amazing at pretending
That I've got a lot to give
But I'm fading fast

I made sure to fit the script
And practised all of my best lines
An imperceptible facade

I bit my tongue and I grew quiet
Dressed my body up in shame
Until it wasn't mine

I could try to be selfish for a while
They'll probably hate it but I might like myself
And I'm really good at lying
But I might try to tell the truth
See if that's something I might like

When I think of me in the future
I see someone else
She's not as afraid or as bitter
And she's got more friends
Always been an overachiever, people pleaser, non-believer

Built an image of myself
That suited everybody else
A perfect model child

But as the mould breaks and the seam frays
I begin to feel the score
Of this self-sacrificial state of mind

I could try to be selfish for a while
They'll probably hate it but I might like myself
And I'm really good at lying
But I might try to tell the truth
See if that's something I might like

When I think of me in the future
I see someone else
She's not as afraid or as bitter
And she's got more friends
Always been an overachiever, people pleaser, non-believer
