A Gentle Moon Song

Fallen leaves shiver and signal
The subsequent falling of snow
The tips of my toes start to tingle
With soil that hardens below

A chipmunk runs off with an acorn
To save for the cold winter days
The birds left before the first snow storm
Heading south and avoiding the haze

And the moon looks on in wonder
Though she's seen it all before
She glows softly through til morning
As she will forevermore

When snowdrops appear and bring with them
The rejuvenation of spring
The passersby slow down and listen
To cicadas and frogs as they sing

And the moon looks on in wonder
Though she's seen it all before
She glows softly through til morning
As she will forevermore

For ages before this
And centuries after
She watches and patiently sighs
As billions of people
Look up from below her
With awe in their moon-painted eyes

It is hard now to feel very lonely
Though I stand by myself in the night
Since I know she shines not for me only
But is charitable with her light

And the moon looks on in wonder
Though she's seen it all before
She glows softly through til morning
As she will forevermore
