Visit With Scholastica
Saint Benedict went out and took
The narrow road that led him down below
To where the valley widened
Past the slopes of Subiaco
The February winds were warm but he kept on the cowl upon his pate
He said I cannot wait
To visit with Scholastica
Brother she had said when years were young and trials unbegun
And he was off to go to University
Said brother search the texts of men and they will lead you to the walls of Rome
But the Lord will call you home
To visit with Scholastica
She saw him coming through the woods from out the windows of her convent walls
She said when the evening falls
We'll chant the Psalms and have a supper here and talk of all the good of God
Who spares His holy rod
To let him visit with Scholastica
The brothers grew afraid and waited by the gate the porter rang the bell
And all the monks who dwelled therein returned
And Benedict's heart yearned
He said my sister it is well that I should leave until this time next year
For none remains I fear
To visit with Scholastica
She breathed a prayer said Lord if you send rain then send it now to do us good
It's right and just and fitting that you should
For the night's too young and we're too old and Benedict should not be leaving soon
And rain to smother noon came down
To visit with Scholastica
Saint Benedict looked out and saw the light was dead and a cold rain drowned the sky
He said good sister by
The good Lord you have done this deed and bent the good God to unbend my will
So I'll remain here still
To visit with Scholastica
They talked on and filled the night already filled with rain with pious words
With pure and prayerful speech
And as the monks and sisters claimed their rest to ease the toils of the day
And to make griefs pass away
He visited Scholastica
Three days on from his tower he looked out and saw a vision overhead
And he smiled and he said
I do not see a sparrow nor an eagle soaring on those winds above
It's the sister whom I love
Arising as a dove
And I will bend my brow and keep my brothers and bend will to serve my Lord
But at His holy Word
I'll visit with Scholastica
I'll visit with Scholastica
I'll visit with Scholastica
The narrow road that led him down below
To where the valley widened
Past the slopes of Subiaco
The February winds were warm but he kept on the cowl upon his pate
