Ballad for a Cat Named Anxiety

Right before you met me, you adopted a cat
She wore a tuxedo, and dug through the trash
You took her in from the range where she roamed
Curled up by the fire, a place to call home

When I came around she ran under the bed
Trying to hide from the thoughts in my head
She finally came out eventually
Hunting the shadows and ghosts while we sleep

So giddyup little black cat
And snuggle up here in my lap
I'll try to be gentle
If you try not to scratch
And we'll try to make peace with our past

I wouldn't have picked her, but I've learned to cope
She greets me when I come in from the cold
I know it's my fault when she scratches and bites
Still trying to learn how to read all the signs

I'm growing to love that tuxedo cat
I think she's finally learned to relax
She keeps us awake, every once in a while
But it's not her fault, I really don't mind

So giddyup little black cat
And snuggle up here in my lap
I'll try to be gentle
You try not to scratch
We'll try to make peace with our past
