I've just enlisted, you got a minute?
I can see the color's faded from wearing it out and wearing it proud
Thank you for your service, I gotta say I'm nervous

I haven't been through basic yet, I head down to Benning on the tenth
If you got two cents to spare, would you let me buy you a beer?

And tell me what I'm getting myself into
Was it hard to sleep at night?

I've read the books and I've seen the movies
I've watched what's on the news and I must say it behooved me
To follow my grandpa's footsteps, but he never made it back
I never heard his words of wisdom and he didn't get to meet my dad

Please tell me what I'm getting myself into
