You were there before I came to be, the beat of life, you beckoned me
From lullabies to MTV, from training wheels to moon landings
While cities burned and martyrs fell, we went to school, teach your children well
Tales of changing times, we heard you tell ... you were there

You were there as I drove down the road in my first car, life on my own
Choosing partners, making homes, teaching kids to "just say no"
Worked hard for the money to waste on the way on fitness clubs, computer games
When friends we lost too soon stole our immortality, you were there

And now we struggle making sense of this, the end of innocence
Half a life away from done - it's time to make repairs
For every road not taken, a dozen lie ahead
The other half of life is left to live
