Stolen Canoe

Stole the canoe from my neighbor's backyard
Carried it out through the Berkshires, to the river at dark
Black as a jack, of spades o'er clubs
Paddled into the darkness that painted our love

Thieves only care for the guilt of being caught
What the eyes fail to see, the heart can still watch
To tear the door open's to damage the lock
Can a thief trust the thief?
No he cannot

The sun was still risin', off to the left
I focused on your stomach, and watched every breath
You'd only slept an hour or two
How much can you rest in a stolen canoe

Thieves only steal for the thrill of being caught
What the eyes fail to see, the heart can still watch
To kick the door open's to ruin the lock
Can a thief love a thief?
No he cannot
No he cannot
No he cannot

So I reached for the paddle, and my eyes caught yours
Hit you 'cross the jaw like the day you'd been born
Watched your body float for an hour or two
There's only room for one
In a stolen canoe

Early in the morning, first one to rise
Look out my window and to my surprise
That canoe was gone, gone from my sight
Taken out through the Berkshires, to the river at night
