I held her (feat. Natalie Gamsu)

I had a friend named Summer, but she was never too warm
She was only just the right amount
I was more of a romantic back then, but she had better form
She could take the worst into account

She had a friend named hormones, so she'd see a few boys
But it never earned them any praise
And her longer and bizarrer stories became the background noise
To our rural teenage days

She'd sit on the edge of the silo while I made snow stars in the grain
Swimming in my spaceship made of tin
I remember the look she gave me; she had tears in her eyes
When I pretended to pull her in

So I held her
I held her tight

One morning brought in frost, and Summer brought in a guy,
Which back then was new for both of us
I was set to be his judge and jury, but he was pretty shy
And he barely talked, which was a plus

He thought it was so cool - and I could see Summer cared -
That we'd climbed the massive metal bin
And I said that she would be way cooler if she didn't get so scared
At the thought of jumping in

We sat on the edge of the silo, and when Summer nearly fell
She shielded her stomach with her hand
I remember the look she gave me when she saw that I'd noticed,
And it told me it wasn't planned

So I held her
I held her tight

And I don't think that he knew yet when he jumped down into the grain
Or that the ground would give way underneath him
He sank up to his shoulders
Stuck as the silo squeezed

I was laughing as he panicked, 'cause I just didn't understand
His head was free. I thought he could keep breathing
I figured he was joking,
'Til he stopped and his body... seized

We sat on the edge of the silo, and watched him as he died
Summer's screams eventually broke through
I remember the look she gave me; she had wanted to save him
And she could have been able to

But I'd held her
I'd held her tight
I'd held
onto the only thing I knew was right
