Gullsong

Looked at first as though the double of my dream
How the water danced with sunlights golden gleam
As we gazed to the shore
With our heads held high
All the gulls did sing their coarse and bitter cry

In the land of light a solemn song did thrill
Bore the thrust of hate and godless sovereign will
As we marched through the mud
With our guns slung low
We forsook our youth, the restless and the slow

How we talked till dawn as sixteen bombs were dropped
But then who can speak of what will be and not?
How our words rang with scorn
Through the cool night air
In my sleepless thoughts their sunken faces stare

At the drowning of the scarlet sky
Where the rose tree blooms and bullets fly
It was here that we strayed
Beyond God's grave eye
And across the land those gulls did surely cry
