Evening Star

Last night I woke to find that I was nothing
I awoke on an endless plane
And the emptiness served me much better
Than the thought of what awaited in the day

Breathing in a meek sardonic comfort
I drifted back to sleep
Where dreams sought out to challenge my indifference
Revealing all I have to hold and keep

Is caring tantamount to grieving
My body tells me that it is
Affection is the last kiss before leaving
Loving is a call to the abyss

At last the daylight turned to touch me
So to remind me you were there
I saw the final glimpse of evening starlight
Cascading off you
Filling all the air
