Can't Find a Reason

My mama left home
Didn't say a word
She just walked right out that door
Two weeks later
She came on back
And passed out on the floor

Later that night
As she sobered up, you know
She looked me in the eye
Muttered something 'bout living
Something 'bout dying
And she turned her head to cry

She said
Son, damn I hope that
You don't ever have to live this way
Cause I can't find a reason to leave
And can't find one to stay

It's been a few years
But I still recall
The night mama she passed away
Cause she drank herself stupid
Then she drank some more
And she stumbled into her grave

And daddy took the bottle
From mama's cold hands
And he pressed it to his lips
And he got good and drunk
And he looked at me
And he cried out something like this

He said
Son, I don't think that you and I
Have much more left to say
Cause I can't find a reason to leave
And can't find one to stay

So I circled the globe
Just trying to find
A place to call my own
But I didn't find nothin
I just spent all my money
So I hit the road back home

And I met a little girl
Down at dale's bar
And I was hoping for a one night stand
But there ain't much to do
In this god damn town
So there's a ring on my left hand

And she says
Honey, not tonight, I'm preoccupied
And you've got bills to pay
Now I can't find a reason to leave
And can't find one to stay

Then we got drunk
Or bored, or both
And we had ourselves a baby boy
And we named him Tom
After my old man
And I still don't know quite why

And I tried to run, man
I can't lie
But I ended up right here
At the kitchen table
Talking to my son
Just whispering in his ear

Saying
Son, damn I hope that you don't ever
Have to live this way
Cause I can't find a reason to leave
And can't find one to stay
