Old Soldiers

He lived a lonely life, just him and two kids
Alone in apartment block in the inner city
His mother and father died thanks to their politics
It was only then he started feeling guilty

He was living down in London until it hit the fan
Now he's out here in the country trying to be a man
So his sons and his daughters can look at him
And not at a gravestone

Old soldiers never die; they just fade away
But the cowards crouched in the corner fade under the spray
Though the people he fights for they are ungrateful
And of their duties they are neglectful
So, he fights, for a better day

She was living a life of solitude north of the border
Till she could no longer pay the bills
She moved south for the security
But her views on the world they backed her into a corner
And she had to help them take some of their responsibility

She was here in the country when it hit the fan
Now she's trying to help others wipe the blood from their hands
So, her sons and her daughters can look at her
And not at a gravestone

Old soldiers never die; they just fade away
But the cowards crouched in the corner fade under their spray
And the people she fights for they are ungrateful
And of their duties they are neglectful
So, she fights, for a better day

(Solo)

Old soldiers never die; they just fade away
But cowards crouched in the corner fade under their spray
And the people they fight for they are ungrateful
And of their duties they are neglectful
So, they fight, for a better day

We've been living in the country so that when it hits the fan
We have people to rely on that don't crumble like sand
So our sons and our daughters can look at us
And not at gravestones

Old soldiers never die; we just fade away
But the cowards crouched in the corner fade under our spray
And the people we fight for they are ungrateful
And of their duties they are neglectful
So, we fight, for a better day
