Bandmaster

I led the bands for the armies of Grant
In the battles our Civil War won
To the shade of the old trees, the surgeons' would send me
Of those who would never go on

Some hardly breathing and all of them grieving
For lives, which they knew would be gone
As they lay dying, their final breaths sighing
We played for them comforting songs

One lad so tender, I always remember
His eyes, oh their gaze so forlorn
I see him laying, his whispered voice praying
To forms from a holier shore

Take me along - Don't leave me here all alone
The ground beneath me grows cold
Take me along - Beneath your wings soft and warm
Angels of God carry me home

Now I've grow old, and my story's all told to
The young, and alive - it's been heard
I will soon breath my last: I will soon breath my last
And I'm praying this day in my turn

Take me along - Don't leave me here all alone
The ground beneath me grows cold
Take me along - Beneath your wings soft and warm
Angels of God carry me home

Angels of God carry me home
