Ocean

Felt like goin' in the ocean one day
Thought I'd like to swim
Was sort of feelin' like a bit of a challenge
So I went all the way out to the deep end

Took a boat several miles offshore
Just me and the birds and the air
Felt good to be so all alone
With the wind blowin' through my hair

Stopped the engine once I road far enough
And let the boat drift side to side
This was the perfect little spot for me
To splash and swim and dive

Stood on the very edge of the boat
While I looked around and got my bearings
Then I leaped off with both feet in the air
Feeling proud and strong and daring

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da

Hit the cool water with barely a splash
Fully expecting to swim
But instead of my body feelin' light and free
It felt heavy and I started sinkin'

It wasn't until I was goin' under
That I noticed the cause of my struggles
I looked at my body and to my surprise
It was covered with armor and trouble

Under the water I sank hard and fast
With hardly a moment to think
How in the world could I have been so blind
Not to notice that I would sink

The further down the ocean pulled me
The more pressure I felt in my chest
And in that moment it was do or die
All my soul bein' put to the test

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da

There was no way to swim with armor still on
So I scrambled to look for a latch
I was startin' to fade from the lack of air
When suddenly I felt somethin' catch

In the blink of an eye I was free from it all
But the battle was hardly won
I kicked my legs as hard as I could
To start climbin' back up toward the sun

I'd sunk so deep that all that could guide me
Was that light at the top of the water
And without hesitation that's where I was headed
Swimmin' faster and stronger and harder

Just when I felt my last breath leave my body
And thought "Surely I'm gonna die"
My head broke free above the water
And I gasped for air just in time

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da

I never felt lighter
The air never smelled sweeter
I floated there and started to cry
I'd been wearin' that armor for so long
That I thought it was normal to live just to die

And I would never have contemplated takin' it off
Had I never decided to swim
So I thank God that the armor's at the bottom of the ocean
And now I can swim freely in my own skin

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da

Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da dum da da da
Da da
