Dreams

Woke up in the early afternoon
The sheets around my ankles
The mattress smelled of mildew
Reached for the diary that documents my dreams
The pillows intercepted me and I fell back asleep

Now I'm riding my bicycle down memory lane
I'm fingerpainting portraits in the foggy windowpane
of my mother's purple station wagon on the way to school
Playing chess with Willy Wonka in the deep end of the pool

Can I stay here?
Please let me remain here

Watched a foreign film where there's an ocean on the ceiling
Staring at it now, there's only drywall peeling
I'm picking at the pills in the blanket I lie under
Maybe if I close my eyes I'll fall right back to slumber

I'm in my childhood apartment on 115th street
I'm whispering with my sister so our folks think we're asleep
I'm reading Harry Potter that I've stashed under my pillow
I'm furnishing the treehouse I've built in the whomping willow

Can I stay here?
Please let me remain here
