The Last One to Go

His name was Sudan
He grew up on the plain
"Majestic beast" they called him every now and then
Guarded by good men day and night
He lived a long and lonely life

Some want to cut him down and take a piece of him
Just like they'd done before to all his kin
They've got to know it's wrong
Must hear the cries at night
From dust to dust
They close their eyes

Will anyone shed a tear for the last one to go?
How could it happen here? I just don't know
Tell me now, did you hear about the last one to go?
Is anyone listening? I need to know

"The Last Three" stood on Astor Place, seventeen feet tall
One on top of another, a final plea in bronze
Are they the last links in the chain?
Another race against time

Now there's daughter Najin and "little" Fatu
Will science help us to bend the rules?
We can't turn back time now
Can't bring him back to them
But we can think twice every now and then

Did anyone shed a tear for the last one to go?
How could it happen here? I just don't know
Tell me now, did you hear about the last one to go?
Is anyone listening? I need to know

A storm is on the horizon or so it seems
Mother Nature's got her back up -- you know what I mean
Is she tryin' to tell us something now?
I hope to God it's getting through

Out on the plains, under the sea
Up in the sky and behind the trees
Who will be the next to go?
I've got a better question now
Is this the best that we can do?

Did anyone shed a tear for the last one to go?
How could it happen here? I need to know
Tell me now, did you hear about the last one to go?
Is anyone listening? I just don't know
