The Greatest Generation

Daddy was a Flyboy in WWII
He grew up on a cattle farm in Southeast Mizzou
One of 12 children, they didn't have a lot
Family, God, and Country, That's what they were taught

Part of the greatest generation this world has ever seen
He served his country proudly, on a mission to keep us free

Daddy heard a higher call, the farm was not for him
So he got himself a second job, sweeping out the high school gym
When he made just enough money, for bus fare to St. Lou
He joined the Army Air Corp, at the start of '42

Part of the greatest generation this world has ever seen
He served his country proudly, on a mission to keep us free
They flew in tight formation, but they didn't all come home
Daddy was a Flyboy, many stories left untold

Some take it all for granted, this good life that we live
Our freedom on the homefront, we must never forget
That it could all be gone, leaving only regret
Let's protect the foundation, of freedom that they set

They were the greatest generation this world has ever seen
They served this country proudly, on a mission to keep us free
But when the fight was over, and they didn't all come home
Most who did, hid their scars, and chose to heal alone

What would they think of us now?
So divided and torn, once stood united and proud
We must come together and keep this nation on track
The Freedom that they fought for is under attack

They were the greatest generation this world has ever seen
They served this country proudly, on a mission to keep us free
When the fight was over, they didn't all come home
We owe them our freedom, but we can't do this alone

Lord, we owe them our freedom, but we can't do this alone
