It's Only Natural

I conceive that melancholy for time's passing
Might just be the only connection to eternity
We are ever going to have

I believe that it just might be
The only everlasting truth
Of any worth alongside life
After any individual life is over
After the last human soul is passed
Beyond the countless conceivable civilizations
In the stars have come and gone

We will eventually be reprieved of all else
But we are sure to retain
Our yearning for existence in one way or another
In light of the very nature of survival
Yet maybe every other sentiment or emotion besides a sadness
Regarding the immutable passing of time
Persists only as far as it is strictly bound to a culture
A species, a planet, or any common origin
Besides the universality of being alive

And yet instead of merely grieving
A humble acceptance of the inevitability
Of the passing of time
Might in our meagre advance grant us
An eternal step ahead
Over the nothingness that haunts us
As the origin of our existence
Is distorted indefinitely, in countless ways
While we draw closer to an age
Where nothing's to be remembered

Can it be said that longing to return
To that which we're wrought from
Is irreconcilable with surrendering ourselves
In humble longing
To the will of what's to come?

It may be we are gravitating towards an answer
As a satellite
Bound to eternally revolve around truth
Doomed never to reach it

And if by some unfathomable disruption
Over an eternity of time
We suddenly find ourselves within truth's reach
Are we sure to know so there?
