Occasional Coyote Creep

Jonathan's biking home after his late-night shift
Hours with the patients and the pills and the IV poles
He tries hard to see the best in the people he helps
But it's hard sometimes when they act like assholes
He's spacing out on the ride when he's suddenly at his building
The close-in neighborhood's quiet but the rent is kind of steep
Something catches his eye in the shadows across the street
That's when he sees the occasional coyote, on his 4am creep

Ronnie's walking back to her dorm across the campus tonight
Her tight dress is sparkly black and showing lots of leg
Yeah, those fraternity dudes know how to throw a party
Oh yeah, they know how to drain a keg
Her friend Jonelle was dishing out her number like it was candy
Made her look kind of desperate and kind of cheap
But Ronnie's got higher standards, she'll stay on the prowl for now
Like that occasional coyote, on his 4am creep

Jordan's staring out the window at her front yard
There's a street light and the trees move in the wind
Baby's fed and the husband needs to get up early
She's worried he's getting sick and will have to miss work again
Tomorrow's gonna be another busy one with work and the kid
She knows she should lay back down to get some sleep
Her mind is roaming through the remains of the day
When she spots that occasional coyote, on his 4am creep

Manny's shows up early to the job site
It's a warehouse demo down by the docks
The money's off the books but his boss is such a prick
Some days he spends all his time checking the clock
You never see anyone around this early in the day
So Manny smokes a J as he leans on his old Cherokee Jeep
This morning he feels kind of spooked, though, like something's out there watching
He never sees that occasional coyote, on his 4am creep

Darnell's got another fare in the queue
He's working late this week, his family needs the extra bucks
That last guy he picked up reeked of cigarettes and whiskey
But at least he was friendly when he was in his cups
One last pickup and he'll head back home and call it good
This one's at the edge of town, where the night is thick and deep
He drives slow, looking for his ride like some kind of predator
Like that occasional coyote, on his 4am creep
