Time Runs Backwards

Back when we were young
Our days were sometimes tough
But the world was getting better
And we always had enough
Now we're fully grown
Our future days look bleak
People suffer, cold and hungry
Led by a corrupt rich clique

Freedoms earned by generations before us
Torn away by those in power with no fuss
Always felt the days were moving us forwards
Now it appears more like time runs backwards

Not so long ago
Work was a dangerous place
Death, accidents and incidents
Sadly commonplace
But the people had enough
Workplace safety was enforced
But now the wealthy call it 'red tape'
And scrapping it's endorsed

Freedoms earned by generations before us
Torn away by those in power with no fuss
Always felt the days were moving us forwards
Now it appears more like time runs backwards

In the recent past
People grew appalled
Of sewage dumped into the sea
So it was all outlawed
Now profit above all
Is the country's creed
Our beaches unsafe once again
Thanks to ravenous greed

Freedoms earned by generations before us
Torn away by those in power with no fuss
Always felt the days were moving us forwards
Now it appears more like time runs backwards

Being well was for the rich
In our grandparents' day
Doctors, treatments, medicines
Cost more than most could pay
Now we're heading there again
As our NHS is sold
Profit placed above our lives
And care when we are old

Freedoms earned by generations before us
Torn away by those in power with no fuss
Always felt the days were moving us forwards
Now it appears more like time runs backwards
Freedoms earned by generations before us
Torn away by those in power with no fuss
Always felt the days were moving us forwards
Now it appears more like time runs backwards
