Cowboys and Lonely Crowns

Four foot tall
With an old staircase guitar
The only boy in a small church choir
Was how he'd get his start
Then five foot ten
Gone from Matchbox to driving cars
He said "Mom and dad, someday I wanna be a superstar."

And they said,
"Boy, your dreams ain't rare.
"They're too high, don't even cry
"Cuz this life is never fair."
And he held that weight in his head
A hopeless romantic
Till his eyes lifted and said,

"Maybe I should go
"Pour a little whiskey inside this tired soul
"Mmm, cuz cowboys are better off alone
"And the weight of this crown
"Pulls six feet underground."
So he packed his saddle
And said, "I guess I'm on my own now."

At twenty-four
He tried to find his own way out
Started washing off the makeup
He put on in this old town
And asked his church
A couple things that they didn't know like,
"Why is it wrong if it's the love
"He's felt inside his soul?"

And they said,
"Boy, just try not to feel.
"Don't even cry, and please don't try
"Cuz that love is never real."
And he held that weight in his hands
A lonely romantic
Till his eyes lifted and said,

"Maybe I should go
"Pour a little whiskey inside this tired soul
"Mmm, cuz cowboys are better off alone
"And the weight of this crown
"Pulls six feet underground."
And so he packed his saddle
And said, "I guess I'm on my own now."

Did he know that save up for guitar
Would take him down to Tennessee?
That he'd trade that backyard Ph.D. in
For a big city dream?
That he'd fall in love with a man
And have to tell his family?
That he'd be asking what love means
In a song about shandy?
Did he think that smiling little boy
Someday would be me?

And so I go
With a little whiskey inside this tired soul
Mmm, cuz cowboys are better off alone
And the weight of this crown
Will never pull me down
So I pack my saddle
Cuz I know that there's still far to go
With a big ole dream that
That little boy still holds
Mmm, and this love is all I've ever known
And the weight of this now
Will someday be my crown
But I pack my saddle
Cuz I know I'm on my own for now

(For now)
