Big Black Dog

There's a big black dog at the end of my bed
I can't seem to get rid of
So I feed it instead
He's a dead weight

There's a big black void
In the middle of my chest
That I've tried but can't fill up
So I'm holding my breath
Count to four, count to eight

Feel the weight of the world on my shoulders
Pebbles and boulders
God, everything feels so heavy
No one taught me how to carry this weight

I'm bigger, I'm taller, I'm older
I sleep like a soldier
I keep my gun at the ready
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

I'm climbing a mountain
I'm dragging my feet
I hear the black dog chasing after me
But something changes when I reach the peak

I realize the world's so much bigger than me
And the dog's really small when there's this much to see
And the earth's holding us like it holds the trees
Filling the void like it fills the sea
