What Kind of a King

What kind of a King
Would exchange His throne for a cross
And what kind of a King
Initiates a movement through life loss

And what kind of a King
holds the world in His hands
But also holds my heart
Empathizes and understands

And what kind of a King
Would take my place
Would take that cross
For love's own sake

And what kind of a King
Would dine with peasants
Would find the company
Of wretched sinners pleasant

What kind of a King
Forgives the very ones
Who asked for His death
Blurting out Father forgive them
With His final breath

And what kind of a King
Wouldn't strike back
Holding His angels at bay
And refusing to attack

Oh what kind of a King
Could show the bravery of a Lion
The One installed on His throne
In that place called Zion

Yet what kind of a King
Could simultaneously show
The innocence of a Lamb
The Great I Am
Slaughtered by sin's demands

What kind of a King
Would rock a crown of thorns
Not wearing royal garb
But blood from flesh torn

And what kind of a king
Instead of promoting His enemies disposal
Would let His love hang on the tree
A Divine Proposal

Giving all of Him
For all of us
A crucified King
In which to place our trust

A King initiating
An upside down Kingdom
Where in denying ourselves
We find true freedom

A King who rules by grace
And not by force
A King who promotes patience
And does not coerce

Oh what kind of a King
A Suffering Servant
Who says though we still sin
That we're still worth it

See I've spat on His face
I've yanked His beard
On my hands
His blood was smeared

I've mocked that Man
I've doubted His claims
If I were there
I would have done the same

See I've been Peter claiming
My allegiance in ignorance
And I've been Judas
Betraying Him with a kiss

And I've been Pilate
Questioning truth
And I've been Thomas
Needing more proof

Oh I've been the Pharisee
Pointing my finger
Because I would have been
Adam and Eve contemplating
As the serpent's
Temptation lingered

And yet still somehow
I stand here now
Claiming that to this King
Now I bow

What kind of a King my King
So will we join Him in suffering

The world can have revenge
Power and materialistic things
But take the world and give me Jesus
His alone Praise will I sing

Oh You are the only King forever
Instead of allowing us to dwell
In our shame You made
Our salvation Your endeavor

You left Your throne
Made earth Your home
In the Incarnation
You took on skin and Bone

And in becoming the Prodigal God
You've brought this prodigal, home

What kind of a King my King
Forevermore Your praise I'll sing
I'll join You now in suffering
As I lay my life down
My only true offering
