Towers of Babel

In these woeful evenings
In these days of death
My heart is always beating
And my soul's always bereft
I find that I'm repeating
Wild warnings out of breath
As hours of life are fleeting
In the days that we got left
We build these towers of Babel
Into places in the sky
We choose our fields of battle
And that is where we lie
It's right around the corner
The thing I keep at bay
When you will be the mourner
And don your black and gray
When you will so forlornly trod
The dust of yesterday
When you will eat the bitter root
And weep your tears away
We build these towers of Babel
Into places in the sky
We make our wings too fragile
And that is how we fly
In the gloom of 4 am so restlessly do I
Pray to angels every one
To live and not to die
And they may sing in heaven
But they bring me no reply
Now the fear is in my heartbeat
And the tear is in my eye
I built these towers of Babel
Now I see them where they lay
Let me ride upon the saddle
Till I sleep beneath the clay
