The Charade

Spotlight hits, another show
Same old script, you think I don't know?
Roses, compliments, a practiced grin
This tired act, it's wearing thin

You're playing a part I don't even write
A caricature of love, bathed in dim light
Thinking you've got the moves to win my heart
But darling, you're falling way apart

Fake love, a comedy, a one-man scene
Trying to be the hero, so predictable, I mean
Funny how you stumble, lines all wrong
I'll play along, watch you sing your sad love song

Bored out of my mind, but the show must go on
String you along, see how far you've gone
The curtain's about to fall, don't you see?
This pathetic play holds no appeal to me

Grand gestures, promises you can't keep
Just another act, fast asleep at the deep end
You think you've got me fooled, wrapped around your finger
But honey, this charade, it starts to linger

Another actor on a borrowed stage
Your lines are borrowed, stuck in a bygone age
Every move, a cliché, straight out of a book
But your love, darling, just can't take a look

Fake love, a comedy, a one-man scene
Trying to be the hero, so predictable, I mean
Funny how you stumble, lines all wrong
I'll play along, watch you sing your sad love song

The audience may be fooled by your disguise
But I see through the mask, behind your alibis
Love's a genuine flame, not a practiced line
So go rehearse your act, somewhere down the line

Bored out of my mind, but the show must go on
String you along, see how far you've gone
The curtain's about to fall, don't you see?
This pathetic play holds no appeal to me

Applause dies down, the act is through
No more games, there's nothing left to do
I'll take a bow, walk off this stage
For genuine love, a brand new page
