A Light I Can't Explain

They say that heroines can't be made from air
They must be forged
As adults they'll move out
From fairytales and pillowforts
Most of us won't last much longer than that
And will find a bottle we can drink
I'm probably useless to keep guessing
But at least here's what I think

Who are you next to your parents?
Are they someone who's shoulders on which you stand?
Or are they strangers in the night of which you just borrowed a hand?
Are they the ones who let you discover
Or tell you which bars to lower?
We were supposed to shape the future
Not desensitize our culture

I love her parents for not cutting off her wings
What monster would do that to an angel
That they brought into a world
That's trying so hard to change her?
And how their story inspires her to believe
That miracles can happen every day
And freak out about the serendipities
That led to her and me

She doesn't believe me when I tell her
That she's absolutely gorgeous
She just shakes her head in disbelief
Every time I reassure her
Then she says thank you, love
But can't bring herself to look me in the eye
I hope to one day make her understand
At least I have to try

I think at some point she was hurt
Someone did not treat her right
Maybe she had to go through life
Feeling like a consolation price
And it tossed her heart between dark walls
And somehow she's still kind
Because her parents gave her values
And back pockets filled with pride

So I'll send some some credit in their way
Thank god, that they exist
Cuz without guidance and role models
We would all end up as pricks
But most of all I'll still admire
The endurance of her heart
I'm just thankful I can walk this road
Beneath my northern star
