Tales (Of My Old Father)
"I'm a Newfoundlander born and bred, and I'll be one 'til I die
I'm proud to be an islander and here's the reasons why
I'm free as the wind and the waves that wash the sands
There's no place I would rather be than here in Newfoundland"
Well the Tales of My Old Father were the stories told in old
And followed down through poetry through bards and folk'n lore
O' Father sang me lullabies to trick me to deep sleep
"The fables, myths, and legends, boy, they ought to set you free!"
Forget the lyrics, they repeat a history once told
Forgotten shores where many roamed and many once explored
A new land where our mothers birthed and islands, land behold
The day will come when plundered men, will promise to take hold
Well the Tales of My Old Father were the stories told in old
And followed down through poetry through bards and folk'n lore
Mistral, seaward wind sail me to havens that we seek
"I promise you my child that you'll dine in 'halla's Keep"
Talk to me O' Father old, and don't forget that oceanborns
- Lost in time and lost in shoals of seas that no one knows -
Tell a tale of greener fields and bluer skies and browner trees
This time I will scream aloud and follow you into the deep!
Stories that my Father told were tales that slowly fade in old
Unfollowed by the new age where younglings they forget
Fret not child of mine for I, will sail us through the glorious night
And leave behind the famines that have plagued us once for all
I'm proud to be an islander and here's the reasons why
I'm free as the wind and the waves that wash the sands
There's no place I would rather be than here in Newfoundland"
