Don't You Know Me?

She asks him what he's thinking, he says much less than it seems
She doesn't get the message, he's not some answering machine
She receives all he's sending, but waits for time to play it back
She says, "Don't you know me? Don't you owe me that?"

"You'll make such a loving mother" she remembers when he said
She had the urge to nurture, but he may have meant for him instead
He calls it his little baby, but it's really just her cat
She says, "Don't you know me? Don't you owe me that?"

With the common thread of innocence pulling through
They tie a knot so nothing can come loose
They always said what's made for one
Can only hold what's true
She says, "I know you're in love with us
But maybe you could love me too."

She asks him why he's sinking, he says
"I'm just deep down in our dreams
Where all we have in common is the search for what they mean
And the brightest sun of love we have
Shines beyond what we lack"
She says, "Don't you know me? Don't you owe me?
You went for the soul of me, when you told me that"
