The Road Of Nightmare And Dreams

There are not a lot of streetlights on the edges of this road
I've got regrets to carry and that makes a heavy load
The rain is falling harder, till it soaks right through my jeans
And I cannot help remembering my many might-have-beens
Oh I didn't mean to get this way, I never meant to change
But sometimes life sneaks up on you and starts to rearrange
The way you feel about yourself, and others too, it seems
And so I've come upon this road of nightmare and dreams

It's pretty dark around here now I've moved out from the town
My body's tired of walking, there's a lot more up than down
The cold nips at my fingers, and my old shoes hurt my toes
And my hood lets in the water but, well, that's the way this goes
No I didn't plan to take this road, but I was insecure
And I just had to walk away 'cause I was never sure
That I'd not end up freaking out and bursting at the seams
And now I'm walking down this road of nightmare and dreams

The stars don't give a lot of light, no brightness in the skies
My mind is full of memories and raindrops sting my eyes
My coat just can't keep out the wet, it's right through to the skin
Wherever will I end up now, or where should I begin
I meant to take a different track, to just shake something loose
But now that there's no turning back, I know that it's no use
To walk away and hide away, to swallow all my screams
And just keep going down this road of nightmare and dreams

So I keep walking in this night and hope I'll find a way
To maybe find a spark of light and somewhere safe to stay
With all this darkness in my soul, I'm looking for some lamp
To show me how to find a place a lot less cold and damp
I hoped that I'd be in the light, but that's not what I've found
No, all I've found is loneliness and shadows all around
And though I miss the golden sun and moonlight's silver beams
There is no solace on this road of nightmare and dreams
