Atop gravel laid in shingles
Singing for you
In and out they linger
When heads swim out
Their songs still in your head
Eyes cast down
On a useless wooden structure
Toes wrought from iron
A head whittled from twine
A ruined heart beating
Over and on a machine's spine
Building it up higher and higher
Almost caressing a sky
A dead bird's gaze
Eyes cast down
Undressing
A carpenter and resident
Climbing higher
The dreamless spectating
The dreamless watching
I, the dreamless
Dreaming

Cheeks now hollow
Arms now frail
Thin with sockets showing
Tower bells still ringing

Promises to stay
Requisition for jokes and laughter
Repeating trivial little memories
All talking in circles around a face before the final day

We will stumble to the rood
Face to face with imperfect eulogies
Hand in hand
We will recall all that we can

Attached, finger to finger
Knuckle to knuckle
Forever may this guilt linger
Ashamed of absence
Ashamed of spiteful words we never meant
