All Raked Flat

Chalk it up to a life's ambition
Trying to be all gasoline and pistons
But there's a field out back where there used to be a kitchen
Now it's all raked flat

Is it common sense or is it just tradition
Roadmaps to glad-rags, modern day fiction
There's a ghost of a man steady walking and tripping
I think he thought like that
Now it's all raked flat

Maybe she said something to him in the hallway
That he thought about over and over, almost everyday
And felt so big it changed his whole life's trajectory
Now the house is gone

Finding new lines in the bathroom mirror
And she hates 'em all but in 15 years
There's a car parked right where she cried all those tears
On a concrete slab
Now it's all raked flat

Chalk it up to wishful thinking
Sitting comfortably in a brand new building
Imperceptibly the glass is dripping
It'll all go back
Til it's all raked flat
