Transmission I

Things were never the same the winter after dad was gone
I spent that whole spring and summer moping around town, shiftless and sad
My mom said I was about as useful as a screen doll on a submarine
When fall finally rolled into town, you could find me driving his old beat-up car
Up and down the road without purpose
Or to be perfectly honest with you, any particular destination in life

Anyways, dad was always a decent songwriter
He had a pretty good band in town
And on one of those drives, right as I was hitting that turn where his accident happened
And I mean the same exact spot, like magic, the sunglass holder pops right open
And out falls this tape

Dad's handwriting on the case
Some song I never knew he recorded
My hand was trembling like a leaf in the wind as I popped it in
