God Unboxed

If Jesus walked into this church, would he be among his family?
Would we recognize that he's the one in all our songs and teachings?
What if he loved our enemies and brought strangers to our pews?
Muslims, gays, far left and right that he met at the bar last night
Would you kick him and his friends to the curb?
Would you kick him and his friends to the curb?
Would you kick him and his friends to the curb?
You laugh, but first century clergy did just that

What if he showered love and kindness on people from all sides
Of every sharp division where we just see enemy lines?
What if he blew up all our simplified "us vs. them" hateful schemes
And exposed for what they are all of our idol-ridden dreams
Lust for power, for control and for supremacy?
If Jesus came and did all that, would you know you've seen the King?
Or would you say "you're not welcome here anymore"?

What if the heaven we've imagined is far too small in size?
Maybe it's way bigger than we could ever fantasize
Full of people of all kinds that we've gone and written off
Cause we put God inside a box: "He only loves folks just like us"
And some we thought were real holy won't be around no more
Because they loved their wealth and status more than God and the poor
But if love becomes our motive instead of fear and rage and pride
And if we find some nuance instead of anger robbing blind
Maybe we could bring some heaven here to earth today
And perhaps help Jesus save some face
