The Old Man

Children listening to the old man
Sitting by a river that flows to the sea
He tells them a story of a young man who went to seek a fortune
One that never would be
Is he sad or is he afraid? Is he lost or has he been saved?
The children's eyes are as wide as they can be
As he spins his tale, as the night grows dark
As his dry voice echoes in the wind
The young man came upon a maiden locked inside a prison
Under a linden tree
He tells her he's on a lonely mission to prove to all his mettle
He's come to sets her free
Is she sad or is she afraid?
Is she lost or has she been saved?
The maiden's eyes are full of tears
As she takes his hand, as he breaks the chains
As they run to shadows in the night
Is she sad or is she afraid?
Is she lost or has she been saved?
The maiden's eyes are full of tears
As she takes his hand, as he breaks the chains
As they run to shadows in the night
Soon the riders find the trail and fall upon the young man
That night the blood flows free
He stops and looks into the distance
His story now is over, the children plainly see
Was the maiden safely saved?
Was the young man strong and brave?
The old man's eyes are filled with tears
And his life is old and his heart is cold
And his dry voice echoes in the wind
And the children cry, and they don't ask why
They can see his memories fade and die
Be at peace, but there is no peace and there is no place to go
Where are the children when you need someone
To take your hand?
