Fields of Blue

It's long before dawn when she leaves the house, it is pouring
So tired it hurts, a feeling she's used to ignoring
Dashes half-drenched through the hospital door
Slips on her white coat and onto her floor
Sees something missed by the shift from before
That he would find amusing
It's years ago now that she met him and felt herself falling
Her friends didn't get it at alll, the guy could be galling
That day after rounds was fate's simple twist
He saw the part of her everyone missed
Then it was headlong into the abyss
From where there's no returning
Walking though fields of blue
With nothing at all to do
There in that moment he knew the ending
After school they headed out west to go through their training
Days that bled into nights into days again draining
Like soldiers in battle under attack
He had her front and she had his back
If only they could have stayed living like that
No time to search for meaning
That morning, he seemed especially far
She hugged him, said, "Look how lucky we are. "
He knew she was right
She's startled by someone behind who needs her attending
It's back to the matter of fixing the broken and mending
Work, as always, keeps her upright
But sometimes after a difficult night
She longs for that feeling she felt in the light
Of his understanding
Walking through fields of blue
With nothing at all to do
There in that moment she knew the ending
