A Daydreamer's Lament

He grew up with it all
Raised to hold his head up tall
And to follow his dreams
Paralysed by choice
He struggles to find his voice
He hides behind the page
Devouring knowledge, he studies for a test he'll never find
Each day seems wasted but he needs something special for his life

He acts out a fiction, his fake memoir
Where he's a singer, a winner who plays guitar
The fans they love him, each song he writes a work of art
He knows he's simply searching for a way to set himself apart
From the others who dream all day
Who talk of leaving their path but then choose to stay
They say that good things they come soon to those who wait
But if he's not careful it'll be too late
He stares at his reflection and decides to start today

Every girl he's cared about
He's been too scared to ask them out for fear of what they'll say
He'd rather they say no, and have to let them go
Because he thinks he'll let them down

He hopes that one day he'll marry, have kids of his own
But he worries when the day comes that they're fully grown
They'll see the life that their father has wasted away
They won't be able to help it but to feel deeply ashamed
Of what he could have done with what he had
In his achievements in life it'll just say: Dad
And he's aware that if he can't even love himself
How will someone stick with him through sickness and health?
But he's certain it doesn't have to be that way
He stares at his reflection and decides to start today

He's the product of a middle class safe loving upbringing
An anxious mess, he means the best
But he'd do anything to avoid being called boring

He waits, he hopes he's not too late to shine just like his stars
