Clockwork

I walk the silk streets of Spitalfields
Wondering why I am walking in circles again
Where the French kissed and baths fell through floors
I could never get bored of your talking

We walked through the gates of the city
And followed the river that ran down
And the bankers collected and drank in the sun
With their gadgets and frowns
And I wanted to hold the day
And the sound of myself in your talking

Time passed like time will
When the day is shining and I'm mining into
The new way you need to stop for breath
And as you leaned into the side of the street
I realised it was my turn to speak

But before I could ask if this day could last
Time had moved away gently
Left me waiting in the past with
Nothing but an essence of you
And now I'm alone
And out through the windows comes the sounds of a family
Settling down for the evening news

And I'm on the outside
Looking through
With a face of longing for you and your talking
